Shea High School

Introduction

Becoming a teacher is a very big responsibility. Getting a job is hard enough, but finding a school you would like to work it is important to know everything about your surrounding as well as the school itself. To be able to achieve this goal first you have to do plenty of research and ask many questions to gather that information. The state of Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. It has many great school (SIC) as well as its share of under achieving (SIC) school (SIC) just like every other state. As of the year of 2006 Rhode Island had a population a little over one million people (CITATION) . Throughout the state their (SIC) was 88.9% of white people, 6.2% are black, 2.7% are Asian, 0.6% are Native American, and 1.5% are of mixed race (CITATION) . In the state of Rhode Island their are 36 school districts and 319 schools total. One of the school in the state is called Shea High School. Shea High School is part of the Pawtucket district located in the middle of the state. Shea High School for the last couple years has been as the bottom of the state for school ACADEMIC performance. CITATION?

Community Background

In the town of Pawtucket their was a population of 72,958 in the 2000 census(CITATION?) . Of that population only about 20% of the people actually have a college a college degree with the age over 25. That shows that many people either did not attend college or did not finish college to get a degree. I will get more into that in the school analysis. The town of Pawtucket is boarded BORDERED by the towns of Attleboro, Woonsocket, North Providence, and Providence. Pawtucket is located in central Rhode Island. In the town of Pawtucket their (SIC) is a very diverse population. It consist of whites holding the majority race of 69.1%, second was Hispanic at 13.9%, and other races were at 10.7%. Of that population their are 47.4% males and 52.6% are females. Pawtucket was about $15,000 under Rhode Island average of income per house hold at about $36,407 as of 2005. The community also has a little poverty problems. As of 2005 their were about 19% of people living in poverty in Pawtucket alone IS THIS HIGH OR LOW? . Even with the poverty level a little high Pawtucket had a low crime rate. In 2003, the FBI reported 256 crimes committed in one year WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS LOW?. OF the 256 crimes reported only two were murders. It shows that the crimes that were committed were less harmful. The community background has many different races as well as better qualities then other communities in the area. YOU MIGHT CONSIDER MOVING YOUR LAST SENTENCE UP TO BE YOUR TOPIC SENTENCE IN THIS PARAGRAPH.

District Summary

Shea High School is located in the Pawtucket District. In the district Pawtucket is responsible for educating over 9,000 students for the past couple years. Throughout the 15 schools that are in Pawtucket district their are roughly 700 total teachers, with female being more EVIDENCE (NUMBERS). The district has a diverse population of student again led by the white race of 47%. Next of the list is Hispanic students at 29%, next black students at 22% and last is made up of other cultural back rounds. As you can see their is a number of back rounds (SIC) that attend these school in the district. As you can see this district has 15 school which is much higher then the average district in Rholde (SIC) Island of an average of 5 schools. For the money situation Pawtucket is above the Rhode Island average in many ways. The first is the district total revenue which Pawtucket is well over the Rhode Island average. This is mainly because they have so many more school then each other district as well as the total number of student. The Rhode Island average of total revenue is $34,571,000 compared to Pawtucket's of $106,981,000. As for the school average for the district Pawtucket was good in some above in engilsh (SIC) but fell short in math. For math the district average of scores was 80% and the Pawtucket district was at 65%. In some ways well below the average score of the state. In engish, which includes, verbal and reading the state school was at 80% above the average of the state of about 75%. As you can see this district was in the middle of the state in district scores of the major topic. Next I will talk about the school of Shea High School and how they compared with the rest of the state. NICE TRANSITION STATEMENT.

School Analysis

Shea high school in located in the state of Rhode Island. The principle that runs the school is Dr. Christopher Lord. In the school it goes from grades 9 through 12. It is also located in the Pawtucket District. At Shea High School their are a little more students the most other high schools have in the state. Their were 1153 students in 2005. As you can see that is a good number of students for a high school in Rhode Island. In grade nine their were 353 students, grade 10 their was 304, grade 11 their was 260, and for the graduating class their was 236 total students. As you can see the number of students goes down each year at a big decrease. The graduation rate for Shea High School was met by the state goal of 76% on percent higher then the state average of 75%. Compared to the state average they were behind but they did meet the state average of students graduating. As for the teachers their is a total number of 103. As of a couple years ago their were more women teachers at Shea High School then male teachers but for the year of 2005 the male consist of 51% of teachers. The women held 49% of the teacher positions. As for the academic side of the school. SHOULD BREAK THIS PARAGRAPH UP HERE. For the most part Shea High School met most of the state goals for math and English. For the SAT scores Shea High School students fell a little behind from the state average. The average score in math for the state was a total score of 494. For Shea High school the average was at 442. In verbal the state average was at 484 and Shea High school average was 423. As you can see even though Shea has been at the state average for scores in the state they still found them self behind the state for the SAT scores. As for the progress of this school with the no child left behind act (CAPS) Shea High school met 25 of the 27 targets that they tried to meet. That means they were making insufficient progress. WHICH TARGETS DID THEY MISS? ANOTHER PARAGRAPH: As for health in the school Shea High School is lower then almost every state average when it comes to drugs and alcohol. They were under the state average in drinking, smoking, and smoking drugs each year. The only topic they were over was using chewing tobacco. As for the other health factors for the most part every person when to see a doctor or the school nurse when ever they could. A number that did jump out at me was that 17% of the students did not have a doctor. To me that is a good number of students not seeing a doctor. In the end this school is pretty clean and safe CITATION?.

Conclusion

As you can see their are good points and not so good points at Shea High School. Even though Shea High School as (SIC) finished close to the bottom of the state in learning each time in the past couple years their is some upside to the school. As I stated the acdidems(SIC) are for the most part met in the school and crime rate is not very high. I would not suggest students to go to this school and for teachers if they are having a hard time finding a job then this would not be a bad place to start. It could be a good opportunity to start your future in teaching but would not suggest staying their if other jobs were open. YOU DON'T WANT TO ATTRACT TEACHERS THAT "NEED A JOB!" YOU WANT TEACHERS THAT WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. :-)
